Here’s what you need to know about the PSTN Switch Off
As we navigate the digital landscape of the 21st century, one of the most significant changes on the horizon is the phasing out of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). This shift marks a monumental transition in global communication infrastructure, as traditional landline systems give way to modern digital technologies. The PSTN Switch Off represents a pivotal moment, signalling the end of an era and the beginning of a new era defined by Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and other internet-based communication methods.
The BT Analogue PSTN/ISDN switch off is the closure of traditional network lines. Both the Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network will stop working by 31 January 2027.
Your business will be required to switch over to Internet Protocol (IP) and integrate with a fully digital network across a fibre-based service. Your broadband will also need to be upgraded.
In addition, any equipment or devices that use the PSTN will also stop working. These include EPOS machines, CCTV, alarms, door entry systems and more.
Braodband providers will move into an official stop sell, meaning you will no longer be able to order legacy voice or broadband technology services. This includes upgrading, renewing, and making changes to existing contracts.
PSTN is the use of traditional landline phone networks to make phone calls, while VoIP uses the Internet, converting your voice into data packets.
As well as saving costs, increased call quality and numerous features like ‘video conferencing’, ‘out-of-hours-routing’, ‘call recording’ and ‘voicemail-to-email’ there are many benefits to switching to VoIP including:
